Welcome to St. Josephs Ward
St. Josephs ward is 19 a bedded ward that cares for patients with Orthopeadic and Gastro – Intestinal (G.I.) needs. The ward has a number of different rooms, Single rooms, Double rooms and a 4 bedded ward. Our Single rooms are allocated on patient priority, based on patient medical conditions. If a patient is very unwell or requires isolation or post major surgery these rooms are allocated accordingly. Unfortunately we do not have Private rooms based on Private Health insurances.
Your child will have an allocated nurse both day and night. This staff member will care for you and your child. Your nurse will inform you of the plan for your child. If you have any questions/queries please ask your nurse.
You are more than welcome to visit at any time. We have no restriction on visiting, however we do request that a max number of 2 persons at the bedside. All children must be accompanied by a supervising adult at all times. One parent /Guardian (over the age 18 yrs) may stay at the bedside at night. Also all visitors are requested to be mindful of all patients on the ward.
Night Time on the Ward: if you wish to stay with your child at night on the ward, fold out mattress can be obtained from parent’s accommodation. The Health Care Assistant can assist you with linen. Parents accommodation is based on the 2nd floor of the hospital, ask a member of staff for directions. The hospital also offers parents accommodation off the ward. If you wish to avail of a room in parent’s accommodation you can book it through main switch. These rooms are available upstairs and costing is paid per night to Supervisor in parent’s accommodation. A key is available from a staff member to use the facilities of parent’s accommodation, just ask.
The facilities of the Ronald McDonald house are also available to parents and families, with a small number of family rooms. This is a house based on the grounds of OLCHC. Families of long term sick patients and their siblings can avail of accommodation in Ronald McDonald. Enquiries regarding availability/bookings can be made through main hospital number.
We request that if you are leaving your child that you leave an up to date contact number with staff and ensure that the phone is turned on at all times. This will ensure that staff can contact you should your child become upset /unwell or request your presence.
On the ward facilities include: Parents kitchen is available to all Parents/Guardians. We kindly request that no patients are in the kitchen during their stay. This facility allows parents time to make a cuppa and space to think. Parent’s notice board is available which will provide you with all the necessary relevant information about the hospital, eg. Canteen times, mass times, parent’s accommodation etc.
We have recently opened a new playroom and playground. Our play Specialist Oliva will be avail in the mornings to offer play and distraction therapy to all the children on the ward. Our play room is stocked with lots of fun activities and games to ensure that your child’s stay is a happy one. Also our garden can be accessed from the play room and a number of the bedrooms. Garden has a number of fun activities for your little one to enjoy.
Schooling: We have a number of school teachers available both at ward level and in the classroom setting. Teaching can be performed at the bedside or children may attend the classroom if they feel able. Primary school children attend in the morning with Post Primary attending in the afternoon. We can also accommodate state exams within the hospital.
